My favorite type of ports are well aged tawnies showing aromas of baking spice, almonds, maple syrup and caramel making them a great pairing with cookies, biscotti, nut flavored desserts, vanilla ice cream, full flavored cheese like gorgonzola and blue cheese, or just by itself. The sweetness of port can also make it a great lower calorie alternative for dessert.
Sandeman’s makes a great 20 year old tawny that can be found at most restaurants including PPG.
A tawny port is a fortified wine, from Portugal’s Douro Valley, that is aged the number of years listed on the bottle in oak casks allowing astringent tannins to turn into sediment which is left behind before bottling leaving a very smooth, approachable wine. Enjoy!
